Alcatel helps bring ‘value for money’ to HK broadband subscribers
Hong Kong Broadband Network Ltd (HKBN) has launched a symmetric 1 Gb/s broadband service powered by Alcatel-Lucent’s gigabit passive optical network (GPON) solution. HKBN is the fastest growing broadband service provider in Hong Kong and the first to provide symmetric 100 Mb/s and 1 Gb/s broadband services to Hong Kong’s residential broadband users. At US$26 per month the offer is among the world’s best value for money broadband deals, says Alcatel.
One in three worldwide fixed broadband subscribers is served through an access network provided by Alcatel-Lucent, with the company involved in more than 100 FTTH projects globally, over 85 of which are based on GPON technology. Hong Kong’s bandwidth demand is growing exponentially, driven by cloud computing applications and interactive multimedia services like HD IPTV and online gaming, with residential broadband penetration in Hong Kong now among the highest in the world at 81.4 per cent.
“In response to the growing need for bandwidth, we have been working with Alcatel-Lucent for years now, leveraging their fibre-to-the-home expertise to deploy a world-class broadband network,” said Ivan Tam, Chief Technology Officer of HKBN. “Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution enables us to offer affordable broadband services on a mass-market scale, while readying our network for future demands – driven by super high-definition and 3D interactive multimedia applications.”
“Alcatel-Lucent has been working closely with HKBN since 2007 to deploy our gigabit passive optical network (GPON) solution, to make their broadband network ‘smarter’ – delivering more services, more flexibly, and at dramatically faster speeds,” said President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Asia Pacific Rajeev Singh-Molares. “We remain committed to providing our customer with Alcatel-Lucent’s best-of-breed solutions and global expertise, enabling HKBN to maintain its leadership position in offering advanced broadband services.”
